Why Your Getting Ready Space Matters (Connecticut & New England Wedding Photographer Tips)

When planning your wedding day, it’s easy to focus on the big moments—the ceremony, the reception, and those dreamy golden hour portraits. But as a Connecticut and New England wedding photographer, I can tell you that some of the most meaningful images happen before any of that begins.

They happen in your getting ready space.

If you’re planning a wedding in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or anywhere in New England, this part of your day deserves just as much intention as every other detail.

The Start of Your Wedding Story

Your wedding gallery begins long before you walk down the aisle. The anticipation, the laughter, the quiet in-between moments—this is where your story starts.

A thoughtfully chosen space allows those moments to feel calm, elevated, and beautifully documented without distractions.

If you’re still in the planning phase, you can explore more about my approach to documenting the full day on my wedding photography page (→ internally link to your wedding services page here).

Natural Light is Everything

The biggest factor in how your getting ready photos look? Light!

The ideal space includes:

    •    Large windows with natural light

    •    Light, neutral-colored walls

    •    Minimal use of overhead lighting

Many New England wedding venues offer beautiful character—but not all of them have ideal lighting for photos. Choosing a space with strong natural light ensures your images feel soft, timeless, and true to life.

A Note on New England Wedding Venues

One of the things I love most about being a New England wedding photographer is the variety of venues—from coastal estates to historic inns to rustic barns.

But not all venues are designed for getting ready.

    •    Barn venues can be darker inside

    •    Historic spaces may have limited window light

    •    Smaller rooms can quickly feel crowded

If needed, consider booking a nearby Airbnb or hotel suite specifically for getting ready—it can completely transform this part of your gallery.

Space = A Better Experience

Your wedding morning includes more people than you think—hair and makeup teams, bridesmaids, family, photographers, and videographers.

Having enough space creates:

    •    A more relaxed, stress-free environment

    •    Cleaner, more polished images

    •    Room for genuine moments to unfold

Pro tip: Keep one area designated for bags and personal items. It makes a huge difference in how your photos look.

Where the Details Come to Life

Your invitation suite, dress, shoes, jewelry—these details are part of your story, and they’re photographed at the start of your day.

A clean, well-lit environment allows these elements to be styled beautifully and captured in a way that feels editorial and elevated.

The Most Emotional Moments Happen Here

Some of the most meaningful moments of your entire wedding day happen before the ceremony:

    •    A parent helping you into your dress

    •    A quiet pause before everything begins

    •    Laughing with your closest friends

These are the moments you’ll come back to again and again—and your space plays a big role in how they’re preserved.

Tips from a Connecticut Wedding Photographer

When choosing your getting ready space, prioritize:

    •    Natural light

    •    Neutral tones

    •    Enough room for your group

    •    Close proximity to your venue

And if you’re unsure, ask your photographer. I always guide my couples through this part of the planning process to ensure everything photographs beautifully and feels effortless.
