What to Wear for your Engagement Session (From a Photographer's POV)

If there’s one question I get from almost every couple before their engagement session, it’s this: “What should we wear?”

And honestly it matters more than you think. Your outfits don’t just show up in photos… they shape the entire look, feel, and vibe of your gallery. The good news? You don’t need to overcomplicate it. You just need to be intentional.

Here’s my photographer-approved guide to looking and feeling your best

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Think in terms of color palettes. Choose 2–3 complementary tones and build from there.

For example:

• Neutrals + soft blues

• Cream + rust + denim

• Black + tan + olive

This keeps your photos visually interesting without feeling forced.

Choose Movement Over Stiffness

Flowy dresses, skirts, and layers photograph beautifully because they add motion and dimension. Movement = Magic in photos.

For women:

• Maxi dresses

• Wrap dresses

• Anything that moves when you walk

For men:

• Lightweight button-downs

• Layered looks (jackets, sweaters)

Avoid Loud Patterns & Logos

Busy patterns, neon colors, and large logos can distract from what actually matters—you two.

Stick with:

• Solids

• Subtle textures (linen, knit, chiffon)

• Soft prints if you love them (nothing too bold)

Dress for the Location

Your outfit should make sense where you are. If you wouldn't wear it there in real life, it'll feel off in photos.

• Beach session → light, airy, barefoot vibes

• Downtown → chic, structured, a little elevated

• Field or park → soft, romantic, earthy tones

Think in Layers & Options

I always recommend bringing two outfits: one casual, one slightly more dressed up. This gives you variety in your gallery and lets you switch up the vibe without needing a whole new session.

Comfort = Confidence

If you’re tugging, adjusting, or feeling like yourself isn’t you it will show.

You want to be able to:

• Sit comfortably

• Walk easily

• Move naturally

Because the best photos happen when you’re relaxed and present with each other—not worried about your outfit.

Neutrals Photograph Timelessly

Trendy is fun, but timeless wins every time.

Think:

• Creams

• Tans

• Soft grays

• Muted greens

• Dusty blues

These tones photograph beautifully in any light and won’t feel outdated years from now.

Don’t Forget the Details

Small things make a big difference:

• Clean shoes (yes, I notice )

• Neutral undergarments

• Ironed/steamed outfits

• Hair & makeup that feels like you, just elevated

• Painted nails (let's show off that ring)

At the end of the day, your engagement session isn’t about perfect outfits—it’s about capturing your connection. The goal is to feel like the best version of yourselves, not someone else entirely.
