Who Says Your Flower Girl Has to Be...a Girl?

One of my absolute favorite parts of photographing weddings is seeing couples throw out the “rule book” and make their day feel completely, unapologetically them. And lately? One tradition I’ve been loving seeing reimagined is the classic flower girl.
Because here’s the truth: your “flower girl” doesn’t have to be a little girl at all.

I’ve seen grandmas proudly make their way down the aisle, tossing petals with the biggest smiles you’ve ever seen. I’ve watched brothers, best friends, and even groomsmen fully commit to the role; sometimes with a little extra flair (aka booze) and yes, those moments are always unforgettable on camera! And don’t even get me started on dogs… because a pup with a flower crown or petals attached to their collar? Instant magic.

From a photographer’s perspective, these are the moments that bring so much personality into your wedding gallery. They’re unexpected, emotional, and often filled with laughter—the kind of genuine reactions you just can’t stage.
Think about it this way: your wedding day is a reflection of your story. So why not include the people (or pets!) who mean the most to you in ways that feel authentic?
Is your grandmother your best friend? Let her have her moment down the aisle.
Do you have a brother who would absolutely steal the show? Hand him the petals.
Is your dog basically your child? Honestly… say less. Let’s make it happen.

There are no rules that say you have to follow tradition exactly as it’s always been done. Some of the most meaningful weddings I’ve photographed are the ones where couples leaned into what felt right instead of what felt expected.
And here’s a little secret: those “outside the box” choices? They’re the ones you and your guests will be talking about for years.
So if you’re planning your wedding and wondering whether you have to have a traditional flower girl… consider this your permission to get creative. Make it fun. Make it personal. Make it yours.
Because at the end of the day, those are the moments that matter most—and the ones I absolutely love capturing.
